How do I recover my password to open Budgets Get Real
If you entered an access password, to stop anyone opening the application and viewing your data, you will be asked to provide this immediately before your database successfully opens.
If you can’t remember your password then click on the Forgot Password? link. It will provide you with a summary of the following instructions.
1. Firstly, try all possible passwords
The password you entered could be one or more words (letters or numbers) between 6 and 32 characters long. Passwords are case in-sensitive. Spaces are allowed and you may have entered double-spaces as a security measure.
2. If you can’t determine your password you should make a backup of your current database. This is essential. The Forgot Password screen provides you a link to ‘Create backup now’.
This backup can serve two purposes. Firstly, you have a record should you later remember your password. Secondly, you will need this latest backup if you request us to recover your password.
3. If you have only recently applied the password you may be able to restore from a prior backup without a password. Unfortunately, you will have to re-enter and re-categorise some transactions. This may not be feasible if you do not have backups of all downloaded bank statements. Refer to Backup and restore your database for more details.
4. You can always start again from a new database. If you create a new database you will need to contact us to arrange to re-register this new database. Before doing this you should at least attempt to restore from the backup created upon registration (assuming no password was applied then). Refer to Backup and restore your database for more details.
5. Finally, you can send us your latest backup. From this we will be able to retrieve your password. A fee may apply to this service. You will need to contact us prior to submitting a backup to review and agree to our password recovery policy.
While we can remove your access password we cannot view the data encrypted within your Password Vault.
Why should I enter an access password
The answer depends entirely on your usage. So here are some principles and guidelines to help you decide.
1. Your database file is totally encrypted, irrespective of the setting of this preference. Furthermore, all backups retain their encryption prior to being compressed. Any bank usernames or passwords you enter using the Password vault are automatically encrypted and cannot be viewed even if no access password is applied or by attempting to read the database file in an external editor.
2. Your access password prevents anyone with a copy of the Budgets Get Real application opening you file and viewing your data. It also prevents them exporting your data using the facilities within the Small Business edition.
3. If you are sending backup copies of your database to your accountant, tax agent or book-keeper we suggest that you add an access password. For your security this password should not be sent in any email to which your data file is attached. Either ring the other person or tell them by separate email.
4. Note that your sensitive details encrypted within the Password Vault are never accessible. Only you know the secret can access this data. You should never provide these passwords to anyone. Password Vault passwords should never be similar to your access passwords.
Your Password Vault also allows multiple keychains. For example, you can have a separate keychain for yourself, another one for your partner and then one you jointly share.
